The formation of Machon Chana in 1972 was inspired by the teachings of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Spring Gate School was establish in August of 2000 by Debra Kern, the Director and the mother of a child within the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Mrs. Kern graduated in 1978 from Warner Southern College in Lakes Wales, Florida with a Bachelors Degree. In 1987 Mrs. Kern graduated from Nova Southern University with a Masters Degree in Specific Learning Disabilities. Mrs. Kern is a Florida State Certified Teacher in the areas of: Mentally Handicapped, Specific Learning Disabilities, and English. Spring Gate School was designed for students with difficulties in learning, organizational skills, and social skills. Students receive a personalized education plan designed specifically for them. Trained professionals administer the education plan with a background in special education. The student to teacher ratio is kept low to ensure that each student develops the academic and social skills necessary to become responsible citizens. Students who attend Spring Gate School experience daily academic and social challenges which make it difficult to attend a public educational facility. The Esther B. Clark School is a therapeutic day school for elementary, middle and high schools students who have significant learning, emotional, and behavioral challenges. North Center has been providing quality services to the developmentally disabled of Chicago, since 1968. November of 1968 is when North Center's founder Mrs. Bess Jacobson's son, along with five other students were dismissed from the program they were attending because they reached the age of fifteen. North Center was born because there were no other options for these six individuals. North Center's commitment has always been to assist the person who is disabled in developing their full potential regardless of the type or degree of disability. Because of this commitment we have traditionally tended to serve individuals who are severely and multiply disabled. Meeting the needs of this population requires a great deal of flexibility and creativity in program design. We feel that this has enabled North Center to meet the needs of many clients who would not be able to receive adequate services with other community based agencies. North Center remains a relatively small agency which we believe benefits our clients because it enables us to respond more flexibly and creatively to their needs. Yet, we have adopted the aggressive growth oriented attitude of many larger organizations. We are always looking to increase our range of services, so as to further help our consumers.
