Deerfield Academy, founded in 1797 and located in Deerfield, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest secondary schools in the United States. Renowned for its beautiful scenery and tranquil environment, it is often called an "Ivy League express lane" and is one of the famous "Ten Schools Admissions Organization" in the U.S. King Abdullah of Jordan is also an alumnus. The boarding student ratio is 80%.

The school features an outdoor pathway between classrooms equipped with underfloor heating, designed to melt snow instantly on snowy days to prevent students from accidental falls – a very rare and human-centered design. The school boasts a vast 330-acre campus, 90 acres of fields, 24 tennis/hockey courts, 3 basketball courts, 2 gymnasiums, 10 international squash courts, a fitness center, New England's largest swimming complex (including a 25-yard lane pool and a separate diving pool), a brand-new athletics track, and 2 artificial turf fields. Deerfield Academy is a vibrant academic secondary school with a strong liberal arts program, making it highly reputable among boarding high schools. Teachers and students frequently organize trips to the liberal arts college towns of Amherst and Northampton.

Across the road from the school is Eaglebrook School, a boarding middle school ranked among the top three boarding middle schools in the U.S. Just a stone's throw from Deerfield, Eaglebrook is built into the mountains, offering a superb natural environment and numerous sports facilities. Attending a U.S. middle school first before applying to a U.S. high school is an excellent pathway.

Deerfield Academy adopts a “family-style” dining model (Sit-down Meal). The school arranges nine students and one teacher to eat at the same table to enhance mutual understanding and connection between teachers and students. This dining style occurs 7 times a week, and for this purpose, the school has also developed detailed dining schedules and seating charts. In sports, Deerfield Academy is a championship school for water polo, ice hockey, baseball, and golf. In arts, the architecture course has always been an important part of Deerfield’s art curriculum. Last week, I visited Deerfield for a field trip and learned the latest school information:

1. Deerfield receives approximately 2500 applications annually, with an admission rate of about 5-8%.
2. Deerfield has over 600 students, with boarders making up nearly 90% and international students about 15%. The school particularly emphasizes balancing the male-to-female ratio during admissions.
3. The academic requirements for students are very high; Chinese applicants typically maintain SSAT scores above 90%.
4. The school prefers students who are passionate about learning, possess strong independent learning abilities, and excellent self-management skills.
5. Deerfield emphasizes the teachers' attention to students, with a student-teacher ratio of 1:5. 98% of the faculty and staff live on campus. Each class has a homeroom teacher to ensure the holistic growth of every student.
6. Deerfield has a rich campus culture, with the motto 'be worthy of your heritage'. The school values historical culture and tradition, and hopes that students and alumni will pass down its traditions through generations. For example, the school has family-style meals daily, sings a goodnight song together every Sunday evening, and the head of school takes 9th-grade new students on a hiking trip near the school every year. Graduating students also go on a hiking trip as a graduation tradition.

Deerfield's comprehensive dance program offers training in modern dance, jazz, ballet, pointe, hip-hop, and contemporary dance techniques, as well as instruction in choreography and improvisation. Courses are tailored to meet the needs of all experience levels, from absolute beginners to pre-professional dancers. We have the opportunity to perform and choreograph in each of our three-semester dance concerts.

In addition to Deerfield's dance courses, there is a series of performances and master classes by outstanding dance companies such as Alvin Ailey, Momix, Chicago Ballet, and David Parsons. Furthermore, works by guest choreographers are commissioned for the program's dancers annually. There is also a ballet training program that provides private and semi-private instruction for dancers of all experience levels.

Deerfield's English subject is excellent, its art subject is also very popular among students, and history is particularly outstanding. Professor Hayes' history class is extremely popular. Students' attire tends to be collegiate style, while boys' dressing style leans towards a relaxed look. Students used to be kind and friendly, not overly competitive. Science and math classes are primarily teacher-led lectures, with class sizes around 15-18 students. Humanities subjects are mainly taught in small classes, with an interactive, discussion-based teaching style, and class sizes around 10 students. Teachers do their utmost to tutor students with their homework, even providing after-class assistance.

The school is one of New England's traditional athletic powerhouses. At Deerfield, squash is fun, competitive, and rewarding. The school offers a place for everyone interested in squash. There are recreational programs for beginners, junior varsity teams for athletes to develop their skills, and varsity teams for those interested in competing against the best preparatory school athletes in New England. Strong teams require strong competition, and the Deerfield varsity team also plays against the strongest New England school teams. In a sport that emphasizes individual performance, Deerfield squash fosters a strong sense of team identity and pride. The school's teaching philosophy is distinctly different from that of many preparatory schools. While many preparatory schools adhere to the belief that 'the master leads the way, but personal cultivation is up to the individual,' Deerfield believes that every student should and can enjoy the opportunity to achieve success. Teachers also focus more on students' learning abilities rather than quantitative test scores. Deerfield offers excellent subjects in English, Mathematics, Science, and Humanities and Arts, and the knowledge students acquire during their time at the school remains beneficial even after they enter university. The high-standard, rigorous curriculum enables students to easily adapt to university life and course difficulty.

### Overall Situation:
- Balanced in humanities and sciences, very strong academically.
- Mathematics and sciences offer a wealth of AP courses, while humanities mainly consist of school-designed courses. Some honor courses also reach AP level, and some students even take the AP exams after completing them.
- Many courses offer a certain degree of elective flexibility even for lower-grade students, which is different from many schools and reflects DA's academic strength. Therefore, students should actively communicate with the school to choose suitable courses, and if their abilities allow, they can even opt for relatively challenging courses in lower grades.

### Academic Advantages/Features:
- English: Although there are no choices in 9th and 10th grades, these two courses help students build a solid foundation. In 11th grade, centered around American literature, courses are divided into different types, each focusing on a specific genre or theme of American literature. 12th grade offers entirely elective courses of various types and themes. This thoughtful course design helps students improve their English scores.
- AP Seminar: H2O & Food Systems (AP Research Food Systems): An interdisciplinary research course for 10th and 11th graders, involving issues of freshwater resources, agriculture, and food. In this course, students will develop various skills, including independent research, discussion, and teamwork.

### Shangxue Mingde Student Feedback:
- Chinese students generally report that humanities courses are very challenging.
- The school's computer science and robotics courses and projects are also outstanding.

Deerfield students study English, history, modern languages, classical languages, as well as philosophy and religion, with a focus on examining the human condition. Students thrive in small classes where teachers facilitate lively discussions in a seminar format. The school offers up to 90 different courses across the humanities. For example, the American History course explores how America is composed of race, religion, and personal experience, which is generated through literature. The Political Philosophy class considers questions like: Should there be government? If so, what are its responsibilities? To what extent should its authority extend? The Historical Studies: Memory and Myth class explores how understanding the past influences our policies and shapes our identities. However, this understanding is often flawed and rooted in myth.
