Oregon Episcopal School (OES) is a special place to me for many reasons. The teachers are awesome, they get to know you in and out of the classroom and really pushes students to their limits. They made classes very engaging, are always willing to offer extra support, and bring the passion to their classroom. The dorm community is exceptional. The dorm parents ensures that all students feel loved and safe. They provide foods that remind us of home, activities to explore Portland or do fun things to take a break from academics. The dorms easily felt like home away from home because I had the support of prefects, peers and dorm parents who all showed up and supported me when my family was miles away. The dorms are clean and spacious which made living very comfortable. There is something for every student to do with numerous clubs, athletics, affinities, and classes. The important thing for me was saying yes to new things, hard things and the OES community supported me along the way!

This school has a good reputation and ranking. A child from Shanghai's public system was enrolled. We planned more than a year in advance, so the child was very well prepared during the application process, providing TOEFL and SSAT scores. The interview was also very successful. After enrollment, parents have consistently provided feedback that the child is learning well and adapting very well to the environment, expressing great satisfaction!

Oregon Episcopal School Academic Features:

1. Experiential Learning Program
Oregon Episcopal School's educational philosophy places a strong emphasis on experiential learning, hoping that students learn through hands-on practice and critical thinking. The EC3 Design Center on campus helps students fully unleash their imagination and creativity, allowing them to propose their own ideas and concepts, and then bring them to life. We provide students with the necessary materials, tools, and guidance, enabling them to personally engage in projects such as woodworking, fashion design, and architecture.

2. Global Classroom Curriculum
The Global Classroom curriculum refers to the establishment of "friendship classrooms" between Oregon Episcopal School and schools in dozens of different countries worldwide. They learn and interact with each other through video courses. For example, students from OES and a school in India might attend a history class together, which is quite engaging.

3. Book Exchange (GOBS)
The purpose of GOBS is to foster a lifelong love for reading, writing, illustration, storytelling, and book sharing among students through an annual school-wide book exchange and community donation event. Every spring, Oregon Episcopal School encourages families to donate used books to GOBS to participate in this event. Students who donate books are invited to a "reward book selection" event before the classroom visit. After the event, the remaining books are donated to the community. In recent years, beneficiaries have included the Children's Book Bank, Woodburn Family Learning Center, Southwest Community Center, Washington County Cooperative Library Services, and many small free libraries within the Portland community.

According to feedback from students attending this school, the school's boarders are predominantly international students, while local students are mostly day students. The dormitory management is very strict. The most distinct difference in this school's management compared to others is its mobile phone policy: phones are collected at 10:15 PM.

Because a student's parent reported seeing this information on FS, and was concerned about similar issues at the school, they specifically inquired about it during a meeting with the admissions officer. The feedback received was that the school has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, and is well aware of this comment on FS, but finds it inconvenient to explain in detail publicly due to student privacy protection. Regarding this phenomenon, our common understanding is: boarding school management is relatively strict, and while we cannot completely prevent individual instances of bullying, the school's handling of such incidents is generally fair, just, and reasonable. In the past, individual cases of bullying, including cyberbullying, have occurred at prestigious boarding schools across the US, and most were handled very well.

——————————————————————————————

Alas, upon inquiry, bullying incidents, both cultural and verbal, have occurred repeatedly in this school's dormitories. Dorm supervisors and teachers consistently say one thing and do another, which is disheartening. Although it's a good school, if the dorm problems are not properly addressed, it will continuously damage the school's reputation.

[On-site Report from China Admissions Fair]

The school annually rehearses and performs 4 original stage plays entirely created by students. In sports, Olympic champions and coaches teach at the on-campus fencing hall. OES also excels in lacrosse, soccer, and basketball. The school adheres to a "no cut" policy, meaning that as long as students are willing to participate in sports, they can join a school team, leading to 87% student participation.

Regarding boarding life, there are 55 boarding students and 10 boarding life teachers. These teachers also provide academic support to boarders. The school offers a very rich weekend schedule, fully utilizing its proximity to both the city and nature. Three weeks before spring break, the school has a special Winterim program, allowing students to study abroad, go on hiking expeditions led by school teachers, engage in business studies, and more. The school places great importance on student mental health; at the beginning of each academic year, grade-level team-building outdoor activities are organized to foster understanding, and during exam weeks, various heartwarming stress-relief activities are arranged. The school has strong alumni ties, and alumni families also highly approve of the direction of their children's development.

An OES admissions officer shared insights from a survey of 652 US high school admissions officers. When evaluating a student, the three most important factors are: the transcript (teacher comments are also reviewed), teacher recommendation letters (emphasizing evaluations of academic performance, personality, and interaction with others), and the interview. Interview tips include: do not memorize answers, prepare questions for the school, and relax.

The school offers a 10-week summer program. Some subjects are taught by the school's own teachers, and there is a variety of courses and activities in the morning and afternoon that can be freely combined, but the school does not provide accommodation.
