Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA) stands as a benchmark among top boarding high schools in the United States. Its academic prowess and college matriculation competitiveness consistently rank among the nation's best, serving as a “golden endorsement” for aspiring Ivy League students and those targeting world-class universities. The school boasts the world's largest secondary school library, designed by modernist architectural master Louis Kahn, which is both a central hub for academic study and an enduring classic in the architectural world.

PEA's most iconic Harkness round table teaching thoroughly breaks away from traditional lecture modes. Centered on discussion, critical thinking, and expression, it genuinely fosters students' independent thinking and self-directed learning abilities. The school offers over 450 interdisciplinary courses. While it does not offer AP courses, the depth, breadth, and academic rigor of all its courses far exceed AP standards, directly aligning with undergraduate university difficulty, thereby achieving a seamless transition to the learning styles of top-tier institutions.

School Advantages:

1. Top-tier core academic courses.

2. Profound humanities and social sciences foundation.

3. Highly distinctive arts and interdisciplinary courses.

Overall, PEA is suitable for students with strong communication skills, high self-discipline, a passion for academics, and a willingness to embrace challenges.

Phillips Exeter Academy, co-founded by John and Elizabeth in 1781 in New Hampshire, spans 700 acres and boasts over 1,000 students from the U.S. and dozens of other countries. It features 147 buildings, including 26 dormitories and two dining halls, offering more than 450 courses. The academy employs the Harkness teaching method, with each classroom equipped with a Harkness round table. Harkness aims to foster collaborative learning through the sharing of ideas. Discussions around the Harkness table cultivate students' intellectual curiosity that extends beyond their Exeter experience. Ultimately, students will develop a lifelong love for learning.
Notably, Exeter's library is the world's largest secondary school library, housing approximately 380,000 volumes, encompassing both print and electronic editions. The print collection is spread across nine floors, with shelf capacity for 250,000 volumes. The fourth floor includes two seminar rooms for classes and meetings, and multiple Harkness tables are located throughout the library. The library offers 210 study carrels, two group study rooms, several reading rooms, and long tables for students to study together. The library's seating capacity can accommodate over half of the academy's students.
This year, Exeter has a summer program called the "Global Initiatives Experiential Learning Program," which takes dozens of students to seven destinations, from geothermal pools in Iceland to conference rooms in Berlin. Exeter students will gain firsthand experience in fields such as geology, biology, economics, linguistics, and archaeology.

As a top US high school, students currently attending Exeter report that the 9th-grade math curriculum is competition-level, leading to immense academic pressure. Therefore, students with low mental resilience or weak stress tolerance are not advised to apply to this school.

The school offers a very rich curriculum, catering to students of all talents. For instance, while few schools offer Japanese, Exeter not only provides introductory Japanese but also advanced courses. In addition to Japanese, Russian is also offered.

Exeter's humanities courses are good, but its most outstanding offerings are in STEM. Taking computer science courses as an example, Exeter offers subjects such as mobile application development, building dynamic web, algorithms and software creation, computing and society, data-driven computing, data structures and algorithms, among many others for students to choose from. Famous alumnus Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, graduated from this school.

In summary, this is a very comprehensive school with a particularly strong emphasis on STEM. However, the academic pressure is also very high, making it suitable for high-achieving ("xueba" type) students.

My elder daughter graduated from here, then went to Columbia University in New York, and has now been graduated from college for three years. She said that looking back at her current learning and work experience, her years at Exeter were when she gained the most and made the fastest progress; she learned more there than at Columbia, an Ivy League university. I asked why? She said that for her, Exeter represented a completely new teaching method and educational philosophy, it was her first intellectual awakening, a totally different experience from anything before. Columbia later merely continued to cultivate her using similar methods and philosophies. Her hardest days were at Exeter; studying at Columbia was easier than at Exeter, and her current job at JPMorgan, a Wall Street investment bank, is even easier. She will be grateful to Exeter her entire life.

Harkness embodies cooperation and respect among students, where every voice deserves to be heard. Here, students can explore and think, developing the courage to speak up and the empathy to listen well. At Exeter, every subject utilizes this unique method, which is a collaborative approach based on problem-solving and learning.

During our campus visit, what impressed us most was the whale skeleton specimen suspended above the atrium of the science building; another impressive aspect was the school's Harkness teaching method, which cultivates students' passion for learning and encourages free exploration to unleash their potential. Exeter also boasts many excellent facilities, some even surpassing those of universities, such as the world's largest secondary school library, which offers an atmosphere that is both rigorous and warm; a theater stage with VIP boxes located in their very modernly designed art center, as well as the Forrestal-Bowld Music Center, The Frederick R. Mayer Art Center, and the Lamont Gallery. Exeter's athletic facilities can certainly be considered the "Hermès" of American high schools.

### Overall Situation:
- Academically top-tier, with a large number of high-level courses. The breadth and depth of these courses far exceed the level of ordinary high schools.
- The curriculum structure is very complex. Some courses are full-year, others are semester-based, and some related courses are split across different semesters. Students need to be extra careful when selecting courses; for semester courses, pay attention to combining related ones.
- The school officially does not have AP courses, but its Level 4 and Level 5 Honors and Advanced courses completely meet AP standards, and some even surpass the scope and difficulty of AP. Therefore, most Chinese students will also take AP exams after completing these courses.

### Academic Advantages/Features:
- The Harkness (round table discussion) teaching method is integrated throughout all courses, including mathematics and sciences. Taking mathematics as an example, many courses use problem sets designed and developed by the school itself. Students complete problems before class, take turns presenting solutions in class, discuss together, and the teacher provides comments when needed. While the Harkness method naturally offers many advantages and positive effects, it can be challenging for new students to adapt to, so it's advisable to prepare as much as possible.
- 500-level courses are very challenging, covering a wide range of fields and depths. For instance, the school offers Cultural Anthropology to 12th-grade students, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the subject of anthropology.
- BIO670 Biology Research: For 11th and 12th-grade students who have already taken advanced biology courses, there's an opportunity to participate in research projects with Stanford University professors, studying insulin cells and diabetes treatment. Specifically, Exeter students are tasked with identifying DNA regions that control gene expression in fruit flies. Students who participate in this project in 11th grade also have the chance to intern at Stanford University during the summer between their 11th and 12th grades.
- Other Research Projects: For 11th and 12th-grade students, independent research is conducted under the guidance of school teachers.

### Shangxue Mingde Student Feedback:
- 9th-grade students, especially those from public schools, need some time to adapt to the Harkness teaching method.
- The school has too many courses, offering a lot of flexibility and freedom in course selection. It's crucial to communicate frequently with school teachers to choose courses that are suitable for oneself.
- Religious studies courses are quite challenging, especially those related to philosophy. It's recommended to inquire thoroughly when selecting these courses.

Exeter consistently ranks among the top 3 high schools in the US. Each year, over 25% of its students are admitted to prestigious universities such as MIT, Stanford, and Ivy League institutions. Exeter has a large campus and is a relatively big US high school with over a thousand students, making competition fierce, both for admission and after enrollment. Due to its large student body, it's a US high school with a style similar to a university, thus suitable for students who are independent, proactive, motivated, and have strong resilience. Exeter boasts vast resources, offering over 450 courses and 150 clubs for students to participate in. Known as a "Harvard preparatory school," Exeter maintains rigorous academics, providing a curriculum with more than half of its courses exceeding AP level.
