(How do I support the school
community? What can I do to get involved? How do I join the PTA?)

Certain schools will have second interview, most schools do not. It depends on the school's requirement.

I suggest you to take TOEFL also. Since for most schools, especially the top schools, you will need these scores. The school will compare your child to the other students. For schools' requirements, you can check on official website of each school.

I suggest your child to take the TOFEL J. test first. You can have more information to help you target more schools and we can provide with you the best recommendations of schools.
In terms of learning English, it is a long-term process, where your child needs to be exposed to on a continuous basis. We can provide a teacher who can teach your child English face-to-face or online. Also, let your child read more English books and watch more US TV.

Miss Hall’s School is an all-girls boarding school. All of their students continue on to institutions of higher learning.
The School offers classes in math, science, history, English, foreign, arts, and athletics, also an off-campus experiential learning program called Horizons.
The class of 2016 received acceptances from colleges such as Colorado College, Cornell University, Fordham University, Georgetown University, Ithaca College, the Maryland Institute College of Art, Rochester Institute of Technology, Simmons College, Parsons School of Design, Penn State University, the University of St. Andrew's (in Scotland), and the University of Vermont. You can get a complete college acceptance list on their school official website.
Many Chinese girls are reluctant to go to an all girls school. In fact I think that it is a good thing for some girls who are more timid to go there since they may be able to be at the top of the class without having boys around.

You need to have a TOEFL score 100+ if you want to get into the top 50 schools. It can be lower if you have other things going for you, i.e., teacher recommendations, extracurricular activities, etc. US schools stress BOTH academics as well as extracurricular activities, they expect to see the followings:
• High level of English
• Good grades
• Good test scores
• Outstanding extracurricular activities
• Good interview
• Good essays
You will have to be well prepared in these aspects.
|
|
2017-02-25 09:47:36 |
Yes, there are still school that will take students.
I suggest you to take the TOEFL and SSAT so that you have some information to target more schools. Some schools do not require SSAT and/or TOEFL so you have to go to each website to find out for each school.
Finding a suitable school for your child depends on many things. These include:
• SSAT Scores
• TOEFL Scores
• School grades
• Extracurricular activities
• Whether your child is interested in a large or small school, and city or country school.
|
|

It’s common that the schools do not reply to emails at this time of the year since they are busy with the current accept list, and there are many applicants every admission. Just wait for the results to come out for this year and you will probably see more emails to reach out to you.
|
|
2017-02-25 09:46:30 |
I suggest you to take TOEFL (not TOEFL Junior), and also SSAT. Since for most schools, especially the top schools, you will need these scores. The school will compare your child to the other students. And this also prevents the school from thinking that your child is not trying hard enough to take the test.
For schools’ TOEFL acceptance score, you can check on official website of each school.

Many religious schools are good schools. You need to compare the schools in terms of the followings rather than just religion itself:
-Small or large school?
-Average Class Size
-Where is it and is it easy to get to.
-Graduation Requirement
-Coeducational or single-sex?
-Percentage of students who enter college
-School Accreditation
-Traditional or progressive?
-A source of special programs (for example, arts, sports or computers?)
-A diverse community
-Sensitive to your special needs, whether for rigorous intellectual preparation, for programs devoted to average learners, or for a curriculum geared to students with learning differences?
-Educational focus
-Is the atmosphere competitive? Or more nurturing?
-Different academic department and curriculum
-Typical day
-Typical year
-Faculty
-Advisor

What was your score for the Slep Test? Some boarding schools require applicants who have 58+ SLEP score to provide TOEFL or SSAT scores, or to interview to determine whether the students' English proficiency and SLEP results are consistent. We will need more information to provide you with the best recommendation.
US schools stress BOTH academics as well as extracurricular activities. They want students who are well rounded and have the followings:
High level of English
-Good grades
-Good test scores
-Outstanding extracurricular activities
-Good interview
-Good essays
They would also like to see students who have initiative, have leadership skills, are able to make friends easily, is strong academically, and speaks and write English well.
To prepare for the interviews, read more English books and watch a lot of US TV, talk to a lot of students who are native English speakers, go to summer school, etc.

If you are already in a school in the US, and if you are thinking about transferring at this point, then perhaps the top schools are too late since many of them have deadlines mid or end January. However, there are still a lot of schools that will take applications.

Both of you should go if possible. It’s not about the English ability but it shows that your family is coherent and you are supportive to each other.

It ranks around top 50 among the 200+ boarding schools and the top 200 among the 3000+ private high schools in US. It is a decent ranking. Do realize there are many good schools in US and it’s very competitive. Besides the college readiness, the ranking is also subject to the following factors:
-Academic scores
-Students diversity
-Extracurricular Activities
-Sports performance
-Art performance
-Teachers’ quality and engagement
-Culture & Safety
So the ranking generally is different between Chinese and US rankings. They stress more on different things.

Yes, it helps. US schools stress BOTH academics as well as extracurricular activities. They want students who are well rounded. Good performance or awards in open competition help proves the ability and commitment of your child. While be aware of the time and resources that your child needs to spend if your child is focusing this activity. You also need to make sure your daughter has high level of English, good school grades, good test scores, good interview and good essays.

Both are good schools which have high average SAT/ACT scores and low student-teacher ratio. They received good review from parents and students. A number of AP courses and a wide variety of extracurricular activities are available for students.
Hamden Hall upper schoolers have been known to make notable contributions to the community and outside entities, either via seniors' May Projects (in which all seniors participate in an internship-oriented activity for the month of May) or otherwise. Some upper schoolers have given concerts at local nursing homes and participated in trash cleanup days in the area.
Wardlaw-Hartridge has a bit better review in terms of academics. And it offers instruction in visual and performing arts. Visual arts class and choir are mandatory for all Lower School students, and band class is mandatory for 3rd-5th graders. In Middle School, students must take visual art and choir, but students may choose between participation in band or keyboard class. In the upper school, all arts classes are electives. It has approximately 70% of their graduates in the last four years are enrolled in colleges and universities. Students matriculated to quality colleges like Rutgers University, New York University, Princeton University, Cornell University and Boston University.
You can also choose based on your preferences on your extracurricular activities, or whether you are interested in a large or small school, and city or country school.

It is not really related.
Your SSAT scores fits the requirement of many good schools. While do note that besides the test scores, the schools will also look at school grades, extracurricular activities, teacher recommendation, interview and essays. You will have to be well prepared in these aspects.

You are qualified in terms of the test scores. While be aware that it is a top school, its acceptance rate is roughly 13% last year which means it’s very competitive. Besides the test scores, the schools will also look at school grades, extracurricular activities, teacher recommendation, interview and essays. You will have to be well prepared in these aspects.

Take the SSAT and TOEFL first so that we can have more information to provide with you the best recommendations of schools. Many schools require SSAT as one of the basic application requirements. It also serves as a benchmark that the schools will compare your child’s score with the others.
Besides the test scores, the schools will also look at school grades, extracurricular activities, teacher recommendation, interview and essays. You will have to be well prepared in these aspects. It’s suggested that you have apply few more backup schools. Do you have any preferences in terms of locations, academics, and activities. We will need more information to provide with you the best recommendations of schools.

Ask about teachers, advisors, what students do during weekends, and what a typical student is.
Don’t stress yourself out—or your child. Do not come across as a difficult, demanding parent.
You can ask about the accept rate because it is published on their school as well as other websites.

Change of status can be challenging. Previously US law permitted persons entering on tourist B-2 visas to change status to F-1 visas. That is no longer the case. You should apply from your country of origin or residence, and reenter US in F-1 status.

No. Hard to say. There are a lot of students going abroad to the US to study. I suggest you give yourself more time.

Yes the state does matter. If your child is in a state that has very few students applying to a particular college, it might be easier since many of the colleges want diversity. If your child is going to school in the same state as the college, it may or may not be easier, depending on whether the college is familiar with the school.

4. Location – East/Central/West; urban/suburban/rural
5. Size – <2000, 2000-5000, 5000-10000, 10000
6. Brand name

That depends on when you start high school in the US. For example, many colleges don’t take that much into account a student’s grades in G9. They normally look at 3 years (most important being G11 and first term of G12).
However, if the English standard is not that good, then the earlier you go to school in the US, the better. If your English is good, then G9 is ok since you can spend the time getting used to the curriculum and the way of teaching in the first year, then you start to run afterwards. But if the English standard is not good, you cannot even walk and so the more time that you have the better.

Although Exeter has a lot of facilities and an abundance of courses to take, many other top schools also have that. So the important thing is for your child to find a school that is a good fit for her. Aside from St. Albans, you need more than one back up school, and it is very difficult to make school recommendations until I see the full picture, for example, writing skills, speaking ability, and maturity, amongst other things.

It’s one of the top all-girls schools high schools in Massachusetts. It has high SAT/ACT scores, low student-teacher ratio. Ethnically, 87% are white students. The school receives good reviews from students and parents, and matriculation to many ivy colleges.
Learning a language is up to the student. Some students try really hard to spend more time with non-Chinese students while others do not. Please encourage your child to spend more time with native English speakers. That is the least that he/she can do given that you have given them such a great opportunity and it is such a privilege. Many of the boarding schools have Chinese students so it is up to the child whether they want to get to another level. And this kind of drive is what the colleges want to see in a student when they apply.
It’s a decent school in Pennsylvania, with decent SAT scores. Matriculation to colleges like University of Pennsylvania, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach, and Drexel University.
BUT the FIT is also really important. A student will naturally do better if she likes the school and get a better chance to get into the top colleges. So hard to say which school is better for your child.

Flint Hill is a decent school with average SAT scores. Matriculation to colleges like The University of Alabama, American University, and Boston University. It’s a diverse school ethnically.
Academic, most students from China do not need to worry about their grades. The only academic worry is English. You need to be running as soon as you get there so that you can deal with the English and history courses. Since it is a homestay program, you might want to make sure that your child gets enough or extra food. Spend more time at the school so he or she can spend more time with his or her peers. Don’t only study but try and make friends who are NOT Chinese from PRC.
Depends on the school. Why don’t you go to Flinthill first and then decide what to do after the first 2 months. That will give you another month to work on the applications. Since the student will already be in the US, arranging for interviews would not be as difficult. The reason is because all the top schools want students to be fluent in English, which means that the extra year at Flint Hill would be an advantageous opportunity to learn more English.

1. Some of the schools we recommend are St. Ann's School, Poly Preparatory Country Day School, Brooklyn Friends School, and United Nations International School - Manhattan Campus.
These schools provide a great learning environment and they offers wide variety of extracurriculars and athletics programs for you to explore your child’s interests and discover his or her passions.
2. Not all, but most top schools would consider TOEFL and SSAT.
3. Understood that you have quite some interests, while do realize that when you apply for the school, it is important that whatever you do, the schools can see your passion. Meaning that if you play tennis, they will want to see prizes you’ve won, how your sports teachers are very supportive of your efforts. Keep that up and many of the schools will be interested.

Usually the tour comes before the interview so you have something to talk about. You can also do the tour a few days early but you need to let the school know. Suggest that you tour the school before and not after the interview.
Depends on the school.

This really depends on how your child’s English standard is. If it is good, then you will have less of a problem. But I believe that some of the schools still want to see his G8 transcript so it might not be that easy to skip a class to G9.
Yes your child will be too old. Schools do not want to see students that are that much older than their peers. You can be a few months old than 15 years old when you enter G9, but not too much more. However you should also ask the school about this when you apply as different schools have different requirements.
I recommend that you go to a less competitive US school this year to study G8. That way you can improve on the English more quickly than if your child stayed in China, even at an international school.

No. The English and math recommendations need to be from current teachers, meaning teachers that will teach your child from September onwards this year.

Many of the admission people of the top schools travel in October and November. Nowadays, some schools also travel in the summer. But there are still admission people in the office at that time because not all the admission people will travel at the same time.
I don’t understand your comment about Vericant - Interviewers for Vericant work for the company and not for the schools.

When the student is applying to universities, it is important that whatever the student does, the schools can see his or her passion. Meaning that if the student plays the piano, they will want to see prizes in the school, how the piano/music teachers are very supportive of her efforts. This applies not only to extracurricular activities, but also to academics as well as community services. Keep that up and many of the schools will be interested in the student.

There are recycling of books. For example, at PEA, at the end of each term, students can take their textbooks back to the bookstore to sell back to the school. Students can also buy used books if they don’t want to spend a lot of money on new books. I personally would recommend buying used books since there might be useful information written into the book.
Normally each class would have one textbook. Sometimes the subject teacher may not require you to bring the textbook to class. There are also classes that have open book exams. So it all depends on the teacher and the subject.
In the US, kids do not use pulling luggage. Most kids would use backpacks. So if you don’t want to look different than other students, suggest you use a backpack that has good support for the back.

Yes. After the student’s interview, the interviewer will usually spend about 15-20 minutes talking with the parents. If the parents don’t understand English well, the interviewer will ask the student to translate.

TOEFL scores are usually valid for 2 years for most schools, which means that yes, you can still use the TOEFL from 2016. But don’t you think you will do better if you took the test again?
For SSAT, many schools will ONLY take the results from the same academic year starting September.

There are many good day schools in the United States that are comparable to the top 100 boarding schools. One of the benefits of boarding schools is that the student is able to spend evenings with their friends, such as birthday parties, events in the dorms, etc. This way they have a venue to practice their English every night so they can improve more quickly.

In the past, this school took students for Grade 10 and we expect them to do the same this coming cycle. However, this also depends on whether they have space in G10. Some of the factors affecting this would be 1) attrition 2) enrollment from last year, etc.

This depends on how your English standard is. However, if your English standard is not that good, then the earlier you go to school in the US, the better. If your English is good, then G10 is ok. You can spend the time getting used to the curriculum and the way of teaching in the first year, then you start to run afterwards. But if the English standard is not good, you cannot even talk and so the more time that you have the better.

Academic advisors help students with academic issues and education progress. The academic advisor is an advocate who is interested in the student’s development.
Advisor helps student with 1) academic planning and course selection for current and upcoming semesters, 2) advice and planning during times of academic difficulty, and 3) referrals to resources in the school or the community.
Advisors are knowledgeable about programs and graduation requirements, policies, and procedures. They encourage and guide students to develop and pursue their goals.

There are some high schools that may have good relationships with certain colleges, and very often it is because of the proximity. However, there is also another saying that it may be easier for a student to get into a certain college if they go to a school in a US State that doesn’t have a lot of population, and so not a lot of students would apply out of the state. Since colleges want to have a well-diversified community, they will often take some less competitive students.
